CD of the Month

With so many new jazz CDs being released every week, you can trust Program and Music Director Marcellus Shepard to select the best new offerings. WEAA’s CD of the Month is carefully selected from hundreds of albums, and our hosts play selected tracks from the release throughout that month’s jazz programming. In addition, listeners have several opportunities throughout the month to win the CD and add it to their own collections.

Here’s a vocalist that I fell in love with the very first time I heard her music. My love for her sound was deepened when she came into the WEAA studios nearly 10 years ago and sang live for me in studio. It was the most beautiful performance I’d ever witnessed up close and personal. Her name is Lizz Wright.

It’s all about the Ladies on the latest release of Grammy Award winning percussionist, drummer, composer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington.

There have been countless tribute albums to the 8th Wonder of the World, Stevie Wonder, over the years. However, when it comes to contemporary jazz, outside of Najee’s Songs From the Key of Life, none come close to the brand new release from one of the genre’s top selling artists, Bob Baldwin, who presents MelloWonder, Songs in the Key of Stevie.

One of the most important artists in music today returns with a brand new release on the Blue Note Label, and continues to move music forward. Pianist and composer Robert Glasper is hot off the heels of his Grammy-award-winning Black Radio 2 with his Experiment Band.

What truly has me excited about the art form of jazz is the next generation of artists who stand strong, fearless and take countless risks to move the music forward to its next level. One standout in this group is bassist Ben Williams. The Grammy-award winning artist and Washington, D.C. native returns to the Concord label for his sophomore release, Coming of Age.
