City Councilman Nick Mosby told the Baltimore Sun on Sunday that he's "seriously considering" running for mayor.  Mosby, the husband of Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, would join Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and former Mayor Sheila Dixon in the field of candidates.  Mosby says being mayor is something he's wanted since he was eight years old.

"I know I can lead the city," he told the Sun. "I know I have the managerial skills and the experience to do so. We can't expect these old leaders to take us in a new direction. Baltimore is hungry for change."

Matthew Crenson, professor emeritus of political science at the Johns Hopkins University, told the Sun that he anticipates Mosby would do well competing against Rawlings-Blake and Dixon. He suspects Mosby's biggest issue may be a perceived conflict-of-interest in office, as his wife is the city’s top prosecutor.

August To End With More Than One Homicide A Day

There has been more than one homicide a day in the Baltimore City area for the month of August. Tyvonte Worrell was found shot and killed on Federal Street just after midnight Sunday, making him the 33rd homicide victim this month and the 222nd for all of 2015.  Despite all this, police say their partnership with five federal law enforcement agencies has helped decrease crime.  Last month there were 45 recorded murders in Baltimore.

Former Governor Marvin Mandel Dies

Marvin Mandel, Maryland’s 56th governor, passed away yesterday at the age of 95. Mandel was a Democrat who won two terms in the State House but was forced out of office due to a corruption scandal in 1977.  In a statement released by his family, Mandel passed away peacefully after spending two days visiting with family.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake paid tribute to Mandel. "I join all of Baltimore in expressing my sorrow over the passing of former Gov. Marvin Mandel," Rawlings-Blake said in a statement. "I know that Governor Mandel will be remembered for many accomplishments during his time in state government, particularly the instrumental role he played in developing and promoting public transit in our region. I will fondly remember his love of state and local politics and the stories he would share."

Wellness Center Created For Teachers

Francis Scott Key Elementary and Middle School in south Baltimore now has a wellness center for teachers.  The wellness and exercise center was a gift from Baltimore-based development firm, War Horse. The firm says it's a pilot program and hopes to put wellness centers in other schools around the city.

“We believe that collaboration through our philanthropic investment in facilities and innovative programming which encourages and supports healthy lifestyle for our public servants is a key formula for improving our communities.” said Scott Plank, Founder of War Horse, in a news release on Friday.

Suspect Critically Injured In Attempted Store Robbery

A woman is in critical condition after attempting to rob a liquor store in southwest Baltimore.  Police say they arrived at Starlight Liquor Store on Wilkens Avenue at about 11:30 Saturday night to find a 19-year-old woman shot multiple times.  The woman reportedly entered the store with another suspect, displayed a gun, and announced a robbery.  Investigators say that's when the store clerk pulled out a handgun and shot the woman repeatedly, and the other suspect fled the scene.

Officials Urge Caution After Positive West Nile Virus Cases

Officials are asking residents to take extra precautions after three confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in Baltimore.  Last week, a man in Baltimore County who died tested positive for the virus, though his cause of death was ruled unrelated. Last year, there were six human cases of West Nile Virus in the state and one in the Baltimore area. Officials say controlling mosquitoes has been a big issue this summer.

The Orioles are continuing to fade out of the playoff picture.  The O's managed just three hits in a 6-0 loss to the Rangers in Texas.  Miguel Gonzalez gave up four runs over five-and-a-third innings to take the loss as the Birds lost their tenth in eleven games. The team returns home tonight to start a three-game series with the Rays.
