Nykidra Robinson, CEO and Director of Black Girls Vote, has been campaigning for her program in preparation for the upcoming Baltimore mayoral race, and will be in attendance at the upcoming WEAA-hosted mayoral debate. She spoke this week with hosts of The Baltimore Blend about her initiative's mission:

“Black Girls Vote is an initiative to really, really, really get people -- especially black women -- excited about the upcoming election,” Robinson said.

Year after year, African American women lead in voter turnout. Robinson’s group, Black Girls Vote, intends to take charge of that power with the upcoming release of their official agenda addressing issues of education, economics and health care, changes to which they feel will increase their quality of life -- regardless of which candidate carries that movement forward.

“We will support who supports our agenda, because our vote is so powerful and our vote is our voice,” Robinson said.

Creating opportunity for lower income, at-risk women in Baltimore can create a better life for all voters. Black Girls Vote strives to educate the youth who have been at the forefront of the movement in the public eye, so that they might vote in ways that change those policies that affect them directly.

“We have to meet them where they are -- we cannot talk at them, we have to talk with them,” Robinson said.

The mayoral race is of extreme importance in bringing Baltimore’s specific needs to light in the face of statewide issues that often overlook the city, a power that the group intends to check by following up on the historic voting records of candidates who may be pandering to the crowd for votes.

“They want the power, but we want the policy,” Robinson said.
