In The Groove (Jazz)

Monday-Friday, 7 p.m.-10 p.m.

If WEAA is Baltimore’s “home for cool jazz,” then In The Groove is the heart of the house. Listeners tune in every afternoon from 2-5 p.m. for host Marcellus “The Bassman” Shepard’s creative mix of smooth jazz, straight-ahead classics and neo-soul, and for the best new music hitting the jazz charts. Throw in interviews with some of the hottest artists on the scene and even a few live in-studio sessions, and you won’t find a better way to close out the workday and begin your afternoon drive.

Jazzy Summer Nights Returns

Jun 4, 2015

Jazzy Summer Nights is back! From 1999 to 2010, the series enjoyed a historic run as Baltimore’s premier monthly event, then located downtown at Hopkins Plaza. The series featured some of the hottest names in jazz, soul, and R&B, including Ledisi, Bilal, Raheem DeVaughn, Maysa, and Jeff Bradshaw, who opens the return of the series on June 4 at the Horseshoe Casino. WEAA is a media sponsor, and our own Marcellus “Bassman” Shepard is the MC for the series. For more information, visit www.jazzysummernights.com.

What truly has me excited about the art form of jazz is the next generation of artists who stand strong, fearless and take countless risks to move the music forward to its next level. One standout in this group is bassist Ben Williams. The Grammy-award winning artist and Washington, D.C. native returns to the Concord label for his sophomore release, Coming of Age.

Prince Williams/ATL

After hearing the news that celebrated jazz trumpeter and educator Clark Terry has entered hospice care, I came across this performance by his protégé Justin Kauflin. Despite losing his eyesight at the young age of eleven, Kauflin has gone on to become an award-winning jazz pianist and has even been called “one of the best piano players on earth.”
