Take Two: Quincy Davis and Jacky Terrasson

Style. Grace. Elegance. That’s what I hear throughout the debut recording of drummer Quincy Davis, Songs in the Key of Q. Unlike many young players these days, Davis offers up an album of original tunes, all of which he wrote himself, except for one written by his brother, pianist Xavier Davis.

This 10-set offering features the playing of a few great young lions in jazz, including Dayna Stevens on tenor sax, Vicente Archer on bass, Xavier Davis on piano, and Baltimore’s own Warren Wolf on vibes.

It’s Wolf who steals the show for me. He’s featured on the majority of the tunes, gliding up and down that vibraphone with strokes that are reminiscent of Lionel Hampton on one tune, the soul of Roy Ayers on the next.

The next CD that I popped into my player was a new one by famed pianist Jacky Terrasson. The 48-year-old has been blessing us with music as a leader for the last two decades, and now finds himself signed to the Impulse recording label for the presentation titled Take This. Jacky presents 11 cuts—four incredible original tunes balanced out by seven covers—that range from an upbeat funky rendition on Paul Desmond’s “Take Five” to an Afrocentric reincarnation of Bud Powell’s “Un Poco Loco.” You can’t go wrong with this CD, and I look forward to going deep into it and sharing many cuts with you.

Well, on to the next stack of music. Until next time…
