"Skinny Repeal" of Obamacare fails, McCain votes no

Arizona Senator John McCain

Senate Republicans have failed in their latest attempt to repeal Obamacare.

Their effort to pass a so-called "skinny repeal" went down on a 49-51 vote overnight.  Three Republicans joined all Democrats in opposing a so-called "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act: Arizona's John McCain, Maine's Susan Collins and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski.  The measure also aimed to slash federal funding for Planned Parenthood.  The House narrowly passed a repeal-and-replace bill in May.  Before the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said America deserves better than Obamacare. The measure would have eliminated the individual mandate for health insurance and suspended the employer mandate for several years.  President Trump reacted to the defeat on Twitter, writing "3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch!"
