Northeast Braces for Snowstorm
According to the National Weather Service, Baltimore may only see a couple of inches of snow by tomorrow with higher accumulation of snow north and west of the city, escaping the brunt of a storm that threatens the northeast from Maryland to Maine. More than 29 million people are under a blizzard warning, and 14 million people are under a winter storm warning through Tuesday afternoon. The Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas will see some snow from the storm, however much of the snow will be dumped between New York and New England. So far more than 6,000 flights have been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday, affecting millions of travelers.
Gov. Hogan Faces First Storm
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is dealing with his first snowstorm as the state’s chief executive. Hogan is urging all state residents to use good judgment and to stay off the roads to allow highway crews to clear roads. The storm is expected to impact the evening rush. The State Highway Administration pre-treated roads in advance of the storm and continues to monitor conditions throughout the state.
State Assembly Briefed on Hogan Budget
State lawmakers were briefed on Governor Larry Hogan's budget on Monday. Hogan submitted a balanced budget last week aimed at addressing a shortfall of roughly $750 million. It includes reductions in rates paid to Medicaid healthcare providers and cost-of-living adjustments for state employees. State analysts are scheduled to go over the plan with lawmakers on committees that will be working on the budget this legislative session.
Comptroller Franchot Begins Third Term
Peter Franchot is starting his third term as Maryland comptroller after taking the oath of office Monday in Annapolis. Franchot is only the fourth comptroller in state history to serve three terms and only the third to serve them consecutively. In his remarks, Franchot talked about what he called, "financial responsibility with a purpose," explaining that support for an issue must be not measured on the dollars spent but rather by the results achieved.
Boys Hospitalized After Ice Fall
Two children remain hospitalized after falling through the ice at a Lansdowne pond. The 12- and 13-year-old boys are in serious condition in the Johns Hopkins' Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Police say they were among four boys who fell through the ice on a pond behind Lansdowne High School yesterday. Two of the boys got out on their own, while bystanders rescued a third. The fourth boy was pulled from the water by a rescue team. Two of the boys, ages eight and 12, have been released from the hospital.
