News Wrap: Dr. Elijah Saunders Dies; Budget Battle in Annapolis

Dr. Elijah Saunders, Cardiologist and Hypertension Specialist, Dies

World-renowned cardiologist and specialist in the study of hypertension, Dr. Elijah B. Saunders, has died. Saunders was an alum of Morgan State University, and head of the Division of Hypertension and former clinical director of the Hypertension and Vascular Biology Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “A true giant has moved off the stage of life,” Rep. Elijah Cummings said about Saunders’ passing in a statement released earlier this week. “I thank God for allowing Dr. Saunders to forever play a major role in my destiny and the destinies of the many lives he touched with his care and compassion.” A public viewing will be held this evening from 3-7 p.m. at First Transformation Church of Jesus Christ on Baltimore National Pike. A funeral service will be held at New Psalmist Baptist Church Sunday, April 12 at 6 p.m.

Governor, Democrats Battle Over Budget 

The battle is heating up between Republican Governor Larry Hogan and state Democratic leaders over the budget for next fiscal year. Hogan has submitted three budget proposals that ignore some of the top priorities on the Democratic leaders' agenda, and House Speaker Michael Busch has refused to allow his chamber to consider them. Senate President Mike Miller is trying to play the middle man on the way to a compromise. No budget talks are scheduled for today.

Maryland Publicizing Business And Individual Tax Cheats 

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is giving unwanted publicity to state businesses and residents that are identified as flagrant "tax cheats." Franchot announced that 20 businesses and 20 individuals owe the state about $13.3 million dollars in unpaid state taxes, penalties and interest. One company, Gaithersburg-based CTS & Associates, is Maryland's top business "tax cheat" this year, owing the state over one million dollars in taxes. 

Anne Arundel Police Officer In Critical Condition 

A police officer is in critical condition after he was shot early this morning in Arnold. The Anne Arundel County police officer was shot while responding to an incident at a 7-Eleven on College Parkway. A police spokesman says the shooting happened after some type of struggle, and the officer was shot in his upper body. The gunman is still on the loose, and police are considering him armed and dangerous. 

Ebola Patient Released From NIH 

An Ebola patient has been released from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. The unidentified patient is an American health-care worker who was flown from Sierra Leone to the U.S. for treatment of the disease almost one month ago. NIH officials say the patient has been discharged in good health and is no longer contagious. 

Orioles Host Blue Jays This Afternoon In Home Opener 

The Orioles host the Blue Jays this afternoon in the home opener from Camden Yards. The O's started the regular season 2-and-1 against the Tampa Bay Rays. And while fans might complain about the price of a day at the ballpark, according to one study, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is one of the cheapest venues in the country to take in a Major League Baseball game. Team Marketing Report's 2015 Fan Cost Index shows a family of four will pay about $163 for a home game, while the MLB average is nearly $212. 

Ravens Announce Preseason Schedule 

The Baltimore Ravens announced their preseason schedule, and the highlight may be Week 3 when they host the regional rival Washington Redskins at M&T Bank Stadium on August 28 or 29. The Ravens will open the preseason August 13 at home against the New Orleans Saints, visit the Philadelphia Eagles on August 21 or 22, and close the preseason September 3 against the Falcons in Atlanta. 

Cherry Blossoms Almost At Peak Bloom 

The National Park Service says it believes the blossoms along Washington’s Tidal Basin are just a few days away from peak bloom. NPS originally predicted peak bloom between this Saturday and next Tuesday. The blossoms, coupled with nice weather this weekend, should make for big crowds at the Tidal Basin Saturday and Sunday.
