News Wrap: DC Metro Fire, Bag Tax Reintroduced

DC Metro Fire

Washington's Metro subway system will operate on a modified and reduced schedule following an accident that killed one passenger and sent dozens to hospitals with smoke inhalation. The fatality on board the train yesterday was the first on the Metrorail system since a crash between two trains in 2009 that killed eight passengers and a train operator.

Judge Denies Bail Reduction for Bishop

A Baltimore judge declined to change a $2.5 million bail set for a bishop charged with killing a cyclist while drunk and texting. An attorney for Heather Cook of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland said after a hearing yesterday that Cook can't make bail at that amount and will stay in jail. Cook struck Tom Palermo with her car.

Bag Tax Legislation Reintroduced

Baltimore City Councilman Bill Henry is reviving the bag ban. Henry was set last night to introduce legislation prohibiting city stores from handing out plastic shopping bags to customers. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake vetoed similar legislation last month after saying the City Council-passed measure was changed too quickly from what had initially been a $.05 fee on bags.

Mayor To Testify Before Obama's Policing Task Force

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is headed to Washington today to testify before President Obama's policing task force. Rawlings-Blake says she'll talk about efforts to improve relationships between law enforcement and the community. President Obama created the 11-member panel last month following several high-profile police killings of unarmed people. 

Police Investigate Bomb Threat At Catonsville High School

Baltimore County Police are investigating a bomb threat at Catonsville High School on Monday. The call came in just before school dismissal at 2:15, and the building was evacuated. Police searched the school but did not locate anything suspicious. The school was declared safe at about 3:30. Police are now trying to determine who is responsible for making the threat. 

Rally Against Police Violence Thursday In Annapolis

A rally against police violence is scheduled to take place in Annapolis this week. Demonstrators plan to gather in front of the State House Thursday as part of a nationwide day of action against violence committed by law enforcement officers. Meanwhile, in Baltimore City, a rally will start at the U.S. Attorney's Office and continue with a march to City Hall.
