March CD: Kenny Barron's "Book of Intuition"

In this day and age, the term Living Legend is used few and far between. How great it is that one of the jazz greats who fits that title is still adding to his discography. With more than 40 albums to his credit as a leader, NEA Jazzmaster and pianist Kenny Barron returns for another gem on a new release titled Book of Intuition.

Barron recorded Book of Intuition with his longstanding trio featuring bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, who’s been with him for 20 years, and drummer Johnathan Blake, who’s been by his side for the past 10 years. Until now the trio had yet to be documented on record.

The trio ventures through a healthy playlist of cover tunes that include two out-of-the-box Thelonius Monk compositions and a few re-imagined originals of Mr. Barron’s. The CD’s marks the first of two in a series of records for the Impulse recording label.

In the liner notes to Book of Intuition, writer John Murph proclaims the album as one of his best: "As Barron continues writing new compositions while simultaneously revamping his older material, history will certainly reveal Book of Intuition as a quintessential chapter in a fascinating, ever-unfolding oeuvre that exemplifies modern jazz at its finest."

Tune in all month long to hear selections from Kenny Barron’s “Book of Intuition” as it’s our CD of the Month here on WEAA 88.9FM.
