With so many new jazz CDs being released every week, you can trust Program and Music Director Marcellus Shepard to select the best new offerings. WEAA’s CD of the Month is carefully selected from hundreds of albums, and our hosts play selected tracks from the release throughout that month’s jazz programming. In addition, listeners have several opportunities throughout the month to win the CD and add it to their own collections.

January CD: Greg Hatza's Diggin Up My Roots

Reading, PA, native and Baltimore resident Greg Hatza is back with his ORGANization in a brand new CD titled “Diggin Up My Roots.” The project features a collection of R&B and Blues songs that the B3 Organist grew up with.

Songs like Lloyd Price’s “Stagger Lee,” Jimmy Smith’s “Back at the Chicken Shack,”  and Percy Mayfield’s "Please Send me Someone to Love.” Now a few of these tunes are vocals — who ever knew that in addition to his fine playing skills, there’s an inner crooner within Greg!

The rhythm section includes Brian Kooken on guitar, Peter Fraize on saxophone, and WEAA’s own Robert Shahid on drums, so all of the melodies are tight in this musical conversation! Be sure to tune in all month long to hear selection from the latest CD of the Greg Hatza ORGANization “Diggin up My Roots” as it’s our CD of the Month here on Your Source for Cool Jazz & Moore, WEAA 88.9 FM.
