Health Update: Healthy Seniors; Tracking Measles Outbreak

Seniors and Heart Health

For older people who have trouble getting around, light activity is better than no activity. A new study on heart disease and older people shows light activity such as household chores is good for the heart. Researchers at the University of Florida studied the hearts of older people over a 10-year period and found that their risks rose along with the amount of time they were inactive each day. They also found that those with more active time had less heart risk. The study, published by the American Heart Association, shows that the risk of heart disease in senior citizens decreased by the same amount every minute that they were active, even if that meant just moving around the house.

Tracing the Measles Outbreak

Health officials are looking into whether the measles outbreak that started back in December is related to an outbreak in the Philippines. The measles has sickened more than 100 people in California and dozens more in other states across the country after the initial case at a Disneyland resort. Researchers in California say the exact source of the illness has yet to be identified.

Deadly New Superbug

Almost 180 patients at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Medical Center may have been exposed to a deadly superbug. Two deaths at the facility are already linked to the bug known as CRE. The drug-resistant superbug can kill up to 50 percent of patients who catch it.

Health Care Supported by Cable TV

A cable TV company is developing a plan to bring hospital services to your home. Cox Communications is working with the Cleveland Clinic on a venture that would provide in-home health care services such as video consultation, in-home monitoring, and home use of equipment to help recover from surgery. The service would cut down on costly visits to doctors and hospitals.
