First Edition March 13: Rep. Steve King & Media Coverage of Overt Racism

Mar 14, 2017

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King continued his pattern of White nationalist and racist comments recently when he supported the statements of Dutch White nationalist Geert Wilders via Tweet. What is the media’s responsibility in covering overtly racist statements by public officials — and should they be given air time?

Sean Yoes discusses the issue with LaMonte Summers, assistant professor of Media Law and Ethics at Morgan State University, and veteran reporter Charles Robinson of Maryland Public Television’s, State Circle. Also, Dr. Stacey Patton of Morgan State University published an opinion piece in the New York Times over the weekend titled, “Stop Beating Black Children.” Yoes speaks with Patton during the second half of the show.

Yoes talks with Chase Turner, a graphic designer and creative strategist, about branding. And then Khadijah Ali-Coleman and Bathsheba Smith, the dual inspiration partners in the new hour of power, discuss trusting thyself in times of doubt.
