With so many new jazz CDs being released every week, you can trust Program and Music Director Marcellus Shepard to select the best new offerings. WEAA’s CD of the Month is carefully selected from hundreds of albums, and our hosts play selected tracks from the release throughout that month’s jazz programming. In addition, listeners have several opportunities throughout the month to win the CD and add it to their own collections.

CD of the Month: Julian Vaughn's Bona Fide

Kansas City native and self- taught bassist Julian Vaughn is back with his 4th CD as a leader, titled Bona Fide for Trippin ‘N’ Rhythm Records.

The project features some of his best work to date as he assembles a few A-List sidemen including Saxophonist Elan Trotman, Steve Cole and Marcus Anderson. Collectively they present a playlist of cool grooves laced with R&B, traces of soul and even gospel.

I can’t believe how much this brother reminds me of the late bassist Wayman Tisdale, who he’s often compared to, both in height and playing. In his own words, Julian offers, “I want to be known as a great writer and producer just as much as I am an artist.” I believe he’s own his way to achieving just that.

Tune in all month long to hear selections from “Bona Fide,” the latest of bassist Julius Vaughn.
