August CD: Terri Lyne Carrington's "The Mosaic Project"

terri lyne

It’s all about the Ladies on the latest release of Grammy Award winning percussionist, drummer, composer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington.

Her brand new offering on the Concord label is The Mosaic Project: Love & Soul. Like its predecessor, The Mosaic Project, this project brings together an incredible cast of female instrumentalists and vocalists that read like a Who’s Who book of stars.

Chaka Khan, Ledisi, Chante Moore, Nancy Wilson, Lizz Wright, Valerie Simpson and many others are featured as Terri pays homage to a variety of male artists who’ve either influenced her professionally or musically.  Those influences go deep and cover a wide variety of male artist including Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and even Bill Withers.

In her own words, Terri states, “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men. On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.”

I truly was amazed when I put this CD in my stereo. Out of the 12 tracks on the CD, I immediately fell in love with 9 of them. Now if you are a fan of Terri’s, you will find that this release leans more R&B than any other project of hers. One thing I guarantee is that the music is good. Tune in all month long to hear selections from The Mosaic Project: Love & Soul, as it’s our CD of the Month here on Your Source For Cool Jazz & More. WEAA-FM, the Voice Of the Community.
