Afro American Authors Expo

By Tramon Lucas

Authors, vendors, and readers from all over the country gathered at Morgan State University for the 8th annual African-American Authors & Empowerment Expo event Saturday.

Considered one of the largest expos for African-American authors, the African-American Author’s Expo (AAAE) brought vendors along with local and national authors to MSU with stories to tell.

The showcase featured a wide range of genres from comic books to graphic novels to self-help books, as well as history, poetry, spirituality, fiction, and non-fiction.

Some of the authors included MSU English lecturer Kimberly Ann Collins, who was selling her book “Choose You! Wednesday Wisdom To Wake Your Soul.”

Novelist Omar Tyree and spiritual health author the Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin were there and the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator Leonard Pitts and author and writing coach Marita Golden were on display.

Also among the authors represented was Morgan E. Taylor, who co-authored “Daddy’s Little Princess” with her father, G. Todd Taylor. When the book was published two years ago, the then-6 –year-old Morgan said she believed every little girl should think she is a princess. The book was intended to go beyond stereotypical, make-believe images of princesses and provide a real-world view of queens and princesses from a broad cross-section of cultures.

According to the news release, this year’s AAAE was the kick-off to MSU’s homecoming week, which is still in its year-long sesquicentennial celebration.
